Sir Austen Henry Layard GCB PC was an English Assyriologist, traveller, cuneiformist, art historian, draughtsman, collector, politician and diplomat.
Layard uncovered the ruins of ancient Assyria and is best known as the excavator of Nimrud and Nineveh. Many of his discoveries are housed in the British Museum. He investigated the ruins of Babylon and the mounds of Mesopotamia.
